Pain Management and Sedation in the Dental Offices

Bio
Mr. Brewer is a paramedic with 40 plus years of experience, who worked as a career paramedic in an urban/suburban area just south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mr. Brewer has worked extensively with the dental community since 1998. He is a member of the ADSA. He provides BLS, ACLS and PALS courses, in addition to medical emergency courses for individual offices, dental societies, PSOMS, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, UPMC Children’s Hospital Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry, University of Pennsylvania Division of Pediatric, and Periodontics Depts.
Mr. Brewer has assisted in teaching IV sedation courses for various programs and also assists with helping offices purchase and organize emergency equipment and preparing for office evaluations. Mr. Brewer has lectured in several states on the topic of medical emergencies in the dental office. He recently co-authored a chapter on “Medical Emergencies for Nowak: Pediatric Dentistry: Infancy through Adolescence.” In 2014 Mr. Brewer began working as a dental anesthesia assistant in several oral surgery, dental and periodontic offices.
Overview
This 6 hour course is designed to review pain management and sedation techniques from anxiolysis through moderate sedation. Intraoperative and postoperative pain management will also be discussed. This course will also include a review of managing medical emergencies in the sedated patient.
Objectives
- Review the use of opioids intraoperatively and postoperatively
- Discuss the various levels of sedation
- Discuss pa requirements to administer sedation in the office
- Discuss the techniques of Anxiolysis
- Discuss the techniques of Nitrous Oxide administration
- Review of the most common drugs and techniques for mild to moderate sedation
- Discuss management of sedation related emergencies
