“Fear Factor: Treating the Apprehensive and Medically Compromised Patient without a Permit or Opioids” (6 hours)

Dr. Marc M. Gottlieb is Emeritus at Stony Brook University Hospital and maintains a private dental practice in Smithtown, New York. A graduate of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, he went on to complete a two-year postgraduate residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he received advanced training in anesthesiology. Dr. Gottlieb has been recognized as one of Dentistry’s Today’s Leader in continuing education.
This course can be applied to PA State and Federal DEA MATE Act requirements.

Overview:
More than one in four patients avoid regular dental care because of fear. Many self-medicate or expect a single “magic pill.” Others present later in life with extensive medical histories that make treatment more difficult. This course is designed for the general practitioner and the specialist¬ from the first-year student to the dentist preparing to retire.

What the program covers:
Case-based management. How tender loving care, nitrous oxide, and anxiolysis can be combined to treat the apprehensive or phobic patient.
Postoperative comfort. How dexamethasone is used to control postoperative pain and support a smoother recovery.
A complete approach. Other courses isolate medication, communication, or delegation. This program brings those elements together.
When anxious patients—men, women, and children—are managed well, they remain loyal for life and frequently refer family and friends. Treating this population is clinically demanding and professionally rewarding.

Course Objectives:

  • Effectively manage apprehensive children and adults.
  • Know when and how to use Dexamethasone.
  • Differentiate anxiolysis, sedation, deep sedation, & general anesthesia.
  • Early recognition of airway problems and corrective techniques.
