3 parts: “Dental Licensure Requirement Essentials: Child Abuse Reporting, OSHA/Infection Control, and Radiation Safety”

Part 1: Child Abuse Reporting : (2 Hours)
The Pennsylvania state law mandates that all “individuals licensed or certified to practice in any health-related field under the jurisdiction of the Department of State” are Mandated Reporters of Child Abuse, along with any of their employees who have direct contact with children. Taking this course fulfills the 2 hours of Act 31 Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter Training required for license renewal.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain what constitutes child abuse
  • Distinguish between mandated and permissive reporters
  • Detail the responsibilities of reporters
  • Review how to make a report of suspected abuse
  • Discuss who the investigators are and what conclusions may be made
  • List exclusions to child abuse
  • Review protection for reporters and failure to report

 

Part 2: OSHA / Infection Control / Haz Com / HIPAA (2 Hours)

Focus on the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and infection control in the dental office, with OSHA standards and CDC guidelines. Identify risks of bloodborne diseases, modes of transmission, preventive measures, and response protocols in case of exposure incidents; hazard communication requirements, including the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), to ensure safety in handling chemicals in the workplace. Also, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and its requirements for dental offices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize tasks and activities that may involve exposure to blood and OPIMs.
  • Explain the OSHA General Duty Clause and its implications for workplace safety.
  • Detail methods to prevent or reduce exposure, including engineering controls, work practices, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Describe requirements for decontamination, sterilization, and spore testing.
  • Identify GHS pictograms and their meanings along with GHS labeling requirements.
  • Explain the responsibilities of Covered Entities under HIPAA including the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule.

 

Part 3: Radiation Safety (2 Hours)
This course meets the training requirements detailed in Pennsylvania Code, Title 25, Section 221.11.

Learning Objectives:

  • Detail the basic properties of radiation
  • Define the units of measurement for radiation
  • Identify sources of radiation exposure
  • Discuss radiation protection measures
  • Provide an overview of the biological effects of radiation exposure
  • Discuss types of x-ray equipment
  • Review image recording and processing as well as patient exposures and positioning
  • Outline operational procedural requirements
  • Review guidelines for QA program
  • Summarize regulations for X-ray Operators
